Australian Rally Hall of Fame

Hi all, as you are aware the Australian Rally Hall of Fame was introduced in 2013, at a memorable dinner in Canberra. HRA members featured strongly, with Tom Snooks and Bob Watson included in the initial group of 13 inductees. The 2014 intake group for the ARHoF has been finalized, and although names cannot be revealed until the recipients have been advised, once again the HRA will be well pleased with the list of  inductees.

The 2014 recipients of this great honour will be inducted at a dinner in Canberra on Thursday 27 February 2014 at 6.30pm at the Rydges Lakeside Canberra Hotel - 1 London Circuit Canberra ACT 2601, where the presentations will be made in a similar manner to the glittering and highly successful formal dinner of 2013. The same team will be responsible for organizing the function this year, so the high standard will continue.

A highlight of the dinner will be the presence of the 1981 World Champion rally driver, and a figure well loved by Australian rally fans, Ari Vatanen. (Golly, stop swooning!). Ari’s spectacular driving style thrilled local fans in the 1978 Castrol Rally of Canberra and the 1980 Southern Cross Rally driving a Ford Escort. Ari won 10 rounds of the World Rally Championship and five Paris-Dakar events during his brilliant career. His epic drive on the Pike’s Peak course in the USA in a Peugeot 205T16, featured in the video clip Climb Dance, is one of the most spectacular motor sport videos ever made.

Ari will be speaking at the dinner and presenting the 2014 Rally Hall of Fame inductees with their Hall of Fame plaques.

To support and celebrate with the (to be revealed soon) HRA members who are to be inducted, I want to organize at least one, and preferably two tables at the function. Tickets for the Australian Rally Hall of Fame gala dinner will cost $150 per head. I realize this is not cheap, but I can assure you the dinner is an exciting and top quality function.  If you would like to join me on a table to welcome the newcomers to the Australian Rally Hall of Fame and hear Ari Vatanen speak, please let me know as soon as possible. Kim, I am sure you can get a table of Escort tragics together to meet the man who could do things with Escorts that you could only dream about.

In 2013 this function was financially supported by CAMS and the ARC. For 2014 the same level of financial support is not available, but the organizing committee headed by Coral Taylor decided to proceed anyway. We need solid support at club level to make the dinner a success, so please consider joining us. The first round of the ARC, the National Capital Rally is on the weekend after the dinner, so there is potential for a great weekend away.

Sorry to be so long winded with the festive season upon us, but I really want the 2014 function to be as successful as this year’s.

Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year to all and safe rallying in 2014.
